Benefits of whole class guided reading

  • put high-quality literature at the heart of your reading curriculum.
  • model and practise fluency, comprehension and questioning.
  • preteach vocabulary.
  • teach and rehearse reading skills.
  • create a collective conversation and shared enthusiasm for reading.
  • expose children, who are still learning to decode, to more challenging literature.

Expose children to a wider range of texts

By dipping into a range of texts, you will improve children’s confidence in selecting their own book,  entice them to read more and improve their understanding of text conventions and genres.

Encourage Collaborative Learning

Our resources give teachers the flexibility to encourage independent, group and paired learning. Every opportunity is seized to support children in learning from and with each other.

Explicitly Teach Reading Skills

Help children to interrogate texts confidently by explicitly focusing on one reading skill at a time.

We have reframed reading skills from the National Curriculum into 14 child-friendly areas to master.

We also offer plenty of supporting resources, including display materials, posters and a reading record.

Pre-teach Vocabulary

Maximise pupil engagement by removing the barrier of unfamiliar words.

‘Children with poor vocabulary do well with reading up until about 8 years and then drop rapidly as they do not have the vocabulary,’ Hirsch, 2003.
