Creating a Culture of Reading for Pleasure in Schools: Why It Matters and How to Encourage It
Ideas Hive At the beginning of a new school year, as teachers, we’re looking for ways to inspire children to love learning and develop strong
When it comes to reading comprehension, a school’s lack of access to new affordable books has sometimes stifled the curriculum. It’s challenging for teachers to get new books taught in schools because it can take a long time to research the right books and make engaging resources around them.
In an effort to support teachers, we are making comprehension resources that dip into a chapter or two of some engaging reads for KS2 pupils ages 7 to 11. We’ve made the teaching PowerPoints, thoroughly explored the texts for the right chapters to dip into to and made hands on resources designed to stretch your pupils reading comprehension skills.
Get pupils dipping into books that celebrate what’s going on in the world right now. With the Women’s World Cup final just a day away, what better way to start the term than with some football-themed comprehension?
Our football school resources bundle dips in to the popular Ultimate Football Heroes series. As well as dipping into the biographies of some of the top male names – Ronaldo, Mbappe, Messi and Neymar, we have created resources around the top female player, Fran Kirby.
Inspire your budding footballers – girls and boys – by dipping in to these footballer’s life stories. See how they persevered to be were they are today. Discuss how it wasn’t always easy for them. And of course, practise your comprehension skills along the way.
Let’s take a closer look at one of our resources:
Warm up the class with a challenge to name as many of England’s famous female footballers. Learn more about Kirby, then dip into 2 chapters of the book.
Find out about some of Kirby’s insecurities growing up and how her mum helped encourage her to keep on trying. Learn about how she practised, practised, practised to be the best player she could be and gained inspiration from her coach.
Practise your inference skills by picking out evidence form the text that builds a picture of how caring and dedicated Kirby’s mum was in helping her to achieve greatness.
Cut up and use the retrieval cards to clarify your understanding of the text.
Finally, explore the author’s word choices. Examine how words and phrases build a picture of Kirby’s hard work and dedication.
Across three lessons, these questions will allow children to practise SATs-style questions in a fun, low pressure and collaborative class setting. And they will hopefully be inspired by Kirby’s example!
Good luck lionesses!
Unfortunately, Kirby is not playing due to injury in this historic final, but we wish England’s lionesses all the best on Sunday!
