World Book Day 2021

Introduce Refugee Week, 14th to 20th June 2021 with our FREE KS2 assembly. Discuss the terms ‘refugee’, ‘asylum seeker’ and this year’s theme, ‘we cannot walk alone’.

Refugee Week invites us to complete ‘8 Simple Acts’ celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees. Our assembly focuses on one of the simple acts: reading a book.

Follow up the assembly with a reading lesson exploring one of the texts introduced:

‘The Island’ by Francesca Sanna, Year 3+

‘Oranges in No Man’s Land’ by Elizabeth Laird, Year 4+

‘The Boy at the back of the Class’ by Onjali Rauf, Year 5+

With just one week to go until World Book Day 2021, teachers have been thinking of creative ways to bring the fun to the virtual classroom.

Our Favourite is the masked reader challenge. Just like ITV’s The Masked Singer, get your children guessing who the masked reader is by making a short video of your staff reading using the app, ‘Clips’.

Why not turn your most fearsome member of staff into a dragon? Can the children guess who is reading just by the sound of their voice?

For more ideas and to further inspire your class, download our brand new FREE World Book Day 2021 themed assembly.

We have also been creating lots of great KS2 whole class comprehension lessons focusing on some of this year’s fabulous £1 books. Try one on your first week back in the classroom to keep the celebration going and to continue to encourage your children to spend their £1 token.

You’ll find a PowerPoint lesson, PDF worksheets and fun activities on our shop page. Extracts not included but are available on the World Book Day website.

Don’t forget to leave us a positive review if you and your classes enjoyed the lessons and please visit again for new resources soon.
