Lesson 1

Start by comparing stats between footballers and familiarise children with books that have different structures.

Remind children of what inference is and what an incredible inferrer does. Use sentence starters to develop skill.

Next, work together as a class to discuss the organisation of a text and hunt for words that give us an insight into a character’s personality.

In pairs, explore the stats at the back of the book to make inferences about Ronaldo and his sporting career. Discuss how organisation of the text supports understanding.

Lesson 2

First, retrieve information from the text and decide which of Ronaldo’s greatest moments was his best. An excellent opportunity for children to practise building on their own and others’ ideas and challenging views courteously. Use support sheet to structure rich conversation.

Finally, reflect on the lesson by justifying final views.

Lesson 3

Read chapter 24 and explore an author’s choice of words. Clarify your understand ing of the text with some quick-fire questions. Explore language choices in more detail using the question cards.
