Lesson 1

To begin, children need to consider what they would expect from a fantasy story and sort the cards into ‘expected’ and ‘unexpected’ piles. Pre-teach vocabulary. Read chapter one and respond to key questions. Read to the end of page 4 and use the information in the text to visualise the bard and draw it.

Lesson 2

Pre-teach vocabulary. Continue reading as a whole class and the use the clues from the text to respond to inference questions. Finally match the adjectives to the character or ask the children to generate their own description.

Lesson 3

Read on and consider what questions the author leads you with. Share with the class. Signpost the children to similar books.
