Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun by Tọlá Okogwu is an exciting adventure novel suitable for upper KS2. The story follows Onyeka, a girl who discovers she has extraordinary powers linked to her Afro hair and is taken to a secret academy in Nigeria where children learn to control their abilities.
The novel supports exploration of identity, belonging, and self-confidence, while also celebrating African culture and heritage. It works well for whole class reading, offering opportunities to develop inference, prediction, and character analysis, alongside discussion of friendship, responsibility, and using power wisely.
