Warm up the class with a challenge to name as many of England’s famous female footballers. Learn more about Kirby, then dip into 2 chapters of the book.
Find out about some of Kirby’s insecurities growing up and how her mum helped encourage her to keep on trying. Learn about how she practised, practised, practised to be the best player she could be and gained inspiration from her coach.
Practise your inference skills by picking out evidence form the text that builds a picture of how caring and dedicated Kirby’s mum was in helping her to achieve greatness.
Cut up and use the retrieval cards to clarify your understanding of the text.
Finally, explore the author’s word choices. Examine how words and phrases build a picture of Kirby’s hard work and dedication.
Across three lessons, these questions will allow children to practise SATs-style questions in a fun, low pressure and collaborative class setting. And they will hopefully be inspired by Kirby’s example!
