Lesson 1
Introduce the children to the author, Aaron Becker and his collection of books. Children can then read the text ‘A Stone for Sascha’ with the whole class so they can explore the characters feelings and using clues from the text, answer key questions.
Lesson 2
After examining the illustrations in the text in more detail, children work in small groups to respond to questions so they are then able to retell the journey of the stone which they have previously explored, in their own words.
Lesson 3:
Children participate in a discussion about the text using prompt cards and justify their viewpoint with evidence.

SYNOPSIS
From the award-winning, Aaron Becker, author of the Journey trilogy. A wordless story that begins with a girl mourning the loss of her dog. As she contemplates her dog, Sasha’s passing, and skims a stone into the sea, we are transported back to the beginning of time on a journey around the world and through time with the stone.
This story provides lots of opportunities for children to discuss the meaning and themes of the story.

L1 To make predictions about what might happen in a story. To make inferences about a character’s thoughts and feelings. Author focus: Aaron Becker Children to firstly make inferences and predictions about the story based on the front cover and the illustrations from the first few pages. L2 To retrieve key information from an illustration. To make inferences about an illustration using your prior knowledge and clues in the image. To ask questions about a story. Children work in groups to study one of the places the stone visited. Use activity sheet to record notes. Secondly, retell the journey of the stone together as a class. L3 To take part in a discussion about books, taking turns and listening to what others say. To look closely at a story and discuss its main ideas, themes and overall meaning. Discuss children’s interpretation of the significance of the colour gold chosen to highlight the stone throughout the story. In groups, then discuss the key questions about the story.
