Creating a Culture of Reading for Pleasure in Schools: Why It Matters and How to Encourage It
Ideas Hive At the beginning of a new school year, as teachers, we’re looking for ways to inspire children to love learning and develop strong
With children returning to school next week, it’s the perfect time to get to know your pupils and find out about their reading habits. How many sustained the habit of reading regularly this summer? How often did they read? What different genres and authors are they reading? How do they feel about reading? Did they get the chance to visit a library? Use our free get to know your class resources ‘Summer Reading Habits’ worksheet to find out!
With recreational reading in decline, it is more important than ever that our reading lessons actively improve children’s reading enjoyment and broaden their reading choices. We were pleased to see these values reflected in the recently published DfE Reading Framework, July 2023.
With the above in mind, let’s delve in to some of my favourite My Teaching Hive whole class reading resources, which will grow children’s reading mindset and create a culture of reading in your school. Support us in developing more resources by signing up to our growing library of whole class reading lessons that are ready to teach with – extracts included!
Our school subscription is £240. You can get £60 off if you sign up in September with code SUMMER.

First up, we have Knights and Bikes, a fun adventure story, by Gabrielle Kent, which Year 3 will love. This comes from one of my favourite publishers, Knights Of, winner of Children’s Publisher of the Year 2022, who’s aim is to showcase underrepresented voices. Knights and Bikes is also a video game and the first in a series of books that you can hook your readers onto. Our resource dips in to chapter one and page 100, challenging children’s questioning skills.
For those teaching rivers as a topic, River Stories is a a must read with your class. Each glorious river-length page brings five rivers from around the world to life by telling all the stories, histories, geography, myths and legends associated with each.
It’s the perfect opportunity for classes to look at how a text’s structure contributes to meaning and gives the children lots of opportunities to practise retrieval. They can even enjoy making up their own retrieval question cards based on a river of their choice.
Finally, for upper keystage readers, there’s a lot of buzz around Sophie Anderson’s books, and we have created whole class reading resources introducing her first two books to pupils. The House with Chicken Legs is a particularly magical and engrossing tale and should leave children wanting more. We have 5 lessons which give children a flavour of the book and strengthen their inference, clarification and connection skills.
